Stamped Concrete Patios with Fire Pits in Utah
A stamped concrete patio with a built-in fire pit is one of the highest-value outdoor upgrades you can make. Big Star designs and builds the complete package — decorative concrete, integrated fire feature, and a backyard you'll actually use year-round.
4.6—28 Google ReviewsThe Patio and Fire Pit Combo — Why It Works
A patio without a fire pit is just a slab. A fire pit without a patio is a ring of chairs on grass. Put them together and you've got an outdoor living room that gets used from April through November in Utah — and even on mild winter evenings.
This is one of our most popular project types because it dramatically changes how a family uses their backyard. Homeowners tell us they spend more time outside after the install than they did in the previous five years combined. Pricing varies by project depending on patio size, pattern complexity, and fire pit style — reach out for a free estimate.
Stamp Patterns That Work Around a Fire Pit
Not every stamp pattern looks good radiating out from a circular fire pit. We've done enough of these to know what works. Ashlar slate is our most popular choice for fire pit patios — the random rectangular stone pattern flows naturally around curves and creates a high-end look. European fan (also called cobblestone fan) is another strong option because it naturally creates a circular pattern around the fire feature.
Flagstone patterns work well for more rustic or natural-looking spaces, especially in backyards that border foothills or open space. For color, earth tones are the go-to in Utah — think warm browns, sandstone tan, and charcoal gray. We use a combination of integral color and antiquing release to create depth and character. The fire pit itself becomes the natural focal point, and the stamped concrete around it sets the tone for the whole space.
Fire Pit Design Considerations
We build fire pits directly into the concrete pour — they're structural, not just decorative. From a concrete standpoint, the fire pit base needs to be isolated from the surrounding patio slab with expansion joints to prevent heat-related cracking. We form the pit with a concrete block or poured concrete ring, then veneer it with stone, brick, or stucco to match your style.
For sizing, plan on a minimum of 10 feet of clear space around the fire pit for seating — that's the sweet spot where you feel the warmth without getting roasted. A 36 to 42 inch interior diameter works for most residential fire pits. Gas fire pits are cleaner and easier to use (flip a switch and you're done), but they require a gas line run from your home. Wood-burning pits are simpler to build but check your city's fire code — some Utah cities restrict open burning or require specific setback distances from structures.
Building It Right for Utah Weather
Utah's freeze-thaw cycles are tough on concrete, and a fire pit adds thermal stress on top of that. We use high-strength concrete (4,000+ PSI), proper rebar reinforcement, and expansion joints that allow the concrete to move without cracking. The fire pit area gets firebrick or a refractory liner to handle direct heat exposure.
Every patio gets a slight drainage slope (1 to 2 percent) away from the fire pit and your home — you don't want water pooling in the fire pit basin or against your foundation. After the concrete cures, we apply a high-quality sealer that protects against UV, moisture penetration, and deicing salt damage. Reseal every 2 to 3 years and your stamped patio will look great for 20+ years.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a stamped concrete patio with a fire pit cost?
Every patio-and-fire-pit project is unique — pricing depends on patio size, stamp pattern, and fire pit style (gas vs wood-burning). We provide a free on-site estimate so you get an accurate number for your specific project. Give us a call or fill out our form to get started.
Gas or wood-burning fire pit — which is better?
Gas fire pits are more convenient (instant on/off, no smoke, less maintenance) but require a gas line from your home. Wood-burning pits are simpler and cheaper to build but produce smoke and ash. Some Utah cities restrict open wood burning — check your local fire code. From a concrete perspective, both work well.
How far should a fire pit be from my house?
Most Utah building codes require at least 10 feet between a fire pit and any structure, including your home, fence, pergola, or shed. Gas fire pits may have different requirements than wood-burning. We factor setback requirements into the patio design during your free consultation.
Will the fire pit crack the surrounding concrete?
Not when built correctly. We isolate the fire pit from the patio slab with expansion joints that allow each section to expand and contract independently. The fire pit interior gets firebrick or refractory liner to absorb direct heat. This approach prevents heat-related cracking in the decorative concrete.
What stamp patterns look best around a fire pit?
Ashlar slate and flagstone patterns are our most popular choices for fire pit patios because they flow naturally around curves. European fan (cobblestone) patterns also work well since they create a natural radial design.
